Recently the hamlet of Dungannon, Ontario, about twenty minutes from Goderich, experienced a population boom – at least for one day anyway! Saturday, June 18th dawned bright and sunny at the Dungannon Fairgrounds as the planning committee kicked into action with the last minute preparations for the 12th Annual Dungannon Super Pull. The Super Pull showcases tractor and truck pulling classes sanctioned through three organizations in Ontario – the Southwestern Ontario Tractor Pullers Association, the Great Lakes Truck and Tractor Pullers Association and the Central Ontario Tractor Pullers Association. In addition to the action on the pulling track, the committee make every effort to ensure this is a family event. For 2011, attractions for the youngsters included an inflatable bounce house, face painting and Snippity the clown.
Pulling action kicked off at 4:30 in the afternoon under bright sunny skies as the drivers took to the track to introduce themselves and give the fans the opportunity to see the faces behind the helmets. The 3500 plus spectators in attendance were treated to over six hours of pulling action. With a mixture of Chevy, GMC, Ford and a couple of Dodges thrown in for balance in the truck classes, many could cheer for their favourite brand. If the smokers were more your style, you had plenty of IH and John Deere’s to choose from with a couple of Fords thrown in for good measure. The evening wrapped up with the ear-splitting noise of the super-charged two wheel drive trucks and the multi-engine modified tractors.
With over one hundred passes down the track, and over fifteen area competitors, local fans had plenty of favourites to cheer toward the full pull mark. Competitors converged upon Dungannon from Michigan, New York and throughout Ontario.
For the Southwestern Ontario Tractor Pullers Association, the Dungannon Super Pull was also the event chosen to be their annual charity pull. At the charity pull, drivers registered in SWOTPA classes can choose to donate any portion of their prize money to the charity designated by the association. For 2011, proceeds will be donated to the London Health Sciences Centre Cancer Clinic in London, Ontario. A cheque presentation will be done later in the summer with the total donation to be announced at that time.
Each year, the committee presents the Mike Pentland Memorial Award to the winner of the 7000 lb Modified Farm class sanctioned through SWOTPA. This award is presented to honour Mike who was a great supporter of truck and tractor pulling. Defending champion in the 7000 lb Modified Farm class at Dungannon, was Frank Macko. In an always close battle in the class, Frank was able to defend his title in that class at Dungannon and was again awarded the Mike Pentland Memorial Award.
So for 2011, the Dungannon Super Pull is in the books and can be classified as a success thanks to the many hours of work by the organizing committee in conjunction with the Lucknow Kinsmen Club….but the countdown is on until next June, when we’ll kick some tires, lights some fires and take off for the 300-foot full pull in Dungannon. Mark Saturday, June 16th on your calendar and join us for a great time – just don’t forget your sunscreen and earplugs!
