Baja North Builds A Budget Prerunner

Often when we hear the word “prerunner”, we think of the huge horsepower, mega wheel travel and massive dollar prerunners that we often see in the magazines and online. A lot of these are no more than street legal race trucks that cost as much as your house. Off Road Race Canada marketing partner Baja North, which is located in Kamloops BC, decided to prove that you do not need millions to build a good looking, street legal prerunner vehicle that could be used as a daily driver as well as have some fun on the dirt.


Their customer Brianne Humphries came to them with a 1990 Toyota Extra Cab 2WD that she purchased for $1500. The V6 powered truck was in good shape overall, but Brianne wanted it to not only look like a go fast prerunner, but to also be able to handle like one off road. The largest problem was that Brianne is a starving student and had a limited budget. The crew at Baja North worked together with her and the budget to build the truck you see before you. While leaving the durable Toyota drivetrain alone, they decided to put some of the money into the front suspension. Downey upper control arms, mega travel ball joints and torsion bars, along with dual Bilstein 5125 shocks were added to not only strengthen the front end, but to smooth out the bumps. In the rear, Downey leaf springs and single Bilstein 5125 shocks dampen the bumps. New 30×9.50-15 Pro Comp All Terrain tires with black steel wheels added a total new look to the truck, not to mention more ground clearance and traction. With the interior being in great shape, the exterior was the last to be updated. Fiberwerx fiberglass front fenders and hood were added, as was a custom Baja North bedcage and rear bumper. The custom front bumper features Vision X off road lights. These, along with the Vision X headlights, giving Brianne extra vision while coming home from her night job or school.
